New MRI Machine Is Accurate, Faster, More Convenient

If you’ve got an elbow or ankle out of whack but don’t like the idea of being stuck in the confines of an MRI machine‚ then Tennessee Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics has a solution.
TSM‚ which opened its Mt. Juliet operation in December 2005‚ will be installing an ONIMSK Extreme in September 2007. The machine allows for diagnostics without being enclosed in a full-scale MRI setup‚ making the experience less frightening for adults and children alike. Only the extremity to be imaged is placed in the magnet‚ and the machine has an ergonomically designed chair for the patient. It’s also faster‚ usually taking only 30 minutes or so to complete the imaging process.
When it’s up and running‚ the technology will join the host of other services provided by TSM‚ including physical therapy and the TSM Institute‚ an 1‚800-square-foot conference center.
“The machine will allow us to look at hands‚ knees and shoulders without putting people through our bigger magnet‚” says Lynn Bogle‚ executive director. “It’s a tremendous convenience for our patients‚ and we think we’ll get better images.”
The larger MRI would obtain those same images‚ but being in the small‚ tunnel-like space for any length of time is often an uncomfortable experience. The new machine will provide a viable option to that full-scale procedure‚ and it will also allow TSM to continue its mission of providing quality orthopedic care to patients.
“If we can take these extremity-type injuries and make it easier on the patient – and also give our physicians and our X-ray technicians a good reading – then it’s a win-win all around‚” Bogle says. “We’re constantly looking at ways to upgrade our facility to serve this community and the greater Middle Tennessee area. I think it’s going to be a tremendous addition to what we’re trying to accomplish here.”
